I’m writing this article because I noticed in one of the commercial vertical jump training programs something that is counter-productive to meeting your vertical jumping goals. This little tip can help you increase your vertical in a drastically shortened amount of time. Any program can tell you how to jump, but without the following information you won’t be making the gains you desire.
What I noticed was that the program called for you to do a massive amount of repetitions in your workout, thousands for some exercises. DO NOT DO THIS! If you do, you’ll end up training for months and months and never reaching your goals because you are training your muscles for endurance, ie. to jump repeatedly at a certain level over a greater period of time, not for explosion. This will not bring you gains in your quest for a high jumping ability.
For instance, if you are a sprinter, and you train by running the mile over and over again, sure your muscles will be burnt, you’ll be exhausted, and maybe you’ll think that when you get down to running the 100 meter that you’ll be faster, but you’d be wrong. In fact you are training your body to run at a slower speed over a longer period of time, not training to increase your speed.
The same is true for vertical jump training. If you want to train your muscles to move faster so you can learn how jump higher, you need to train them explosively, with maximum effort everytime. Repetition without explosion will not give you results. You may even lose some inches on your vertical. That would be a horrible for motivation!!
What you need to do is find a program that that gives you a good jump higher workout with vertical exercises, volleyball exercises, and jump higher basketball exercises, and most importantly crank the level of intensity up as far as you can for each exercise, every time. This will get you on the fast track to getting that 40+ inch vertical you always wanted, and in a relatively short amount of time. There are programs out there that if used correctly can get your vertical up 10 inches in a couple of months. Do the research, keep your intensity up, and explode!

Excellent point, you see to many people spending all their energy working on their endurance and bypassing the explosiveness they require for sports like basketball or volleyball. By building the fast twitch muscles through explosive exercises with maximum effort they will start seeing results much faster!
