NBA, union open collective bargaining talks
The NBA and its players' association held their first collective bargaining talks Tuesday, meeting for 3 1/2 hours without exchanging any proposals. The sides shared financial information and called the session "cordial and productive." They added they looked forward to sitting down again before the start of the season.

Kobe-Shaq on Christmas highlights NBA schedule
The NBA is bringing Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal together again for Christmas - this time joined by LeBron James. Bryant and the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Dec. 25, one of the highlights of the 2009-10 NBA schedule released Tuesday. It will be the fourth time in the five years since their partnership ended that Bryant and O'Neal will meet on Christmas.

Knicks work out PG Williams, but make no offer
Jason Williams has worked out for the New York Knicks, though the team made no contract offer to the point guard. Williams, who worked out Tuesday, is attempting a return from retirement this summer and the Knicks claimed him off waivers last week. They will retain exclusive negotiating rights if they make a contract offer by Thursday. Williams spent 10 seasons in the NBA before retiring last September, less than two months after signing with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Cavs, Rockets, Wolves fined for leaking schedules
The NBA has fined three teams an undisclosed amount for leaking details of their schedules before the league released them. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Houston Rockets and Minnesota Timberwolves were penalized, an official with knowledge of the decisions told The Associated Press on Monday. The official requested anonymity because the fines weren't publicly announced. The NBA will release its 2009-10 schedule on Tuesday afternoon. The league forbids teams to release any details before then.
